Hyundai Repair: Automatic gearbox selector settings, hyundai lantra, range switch

Question
QUESTION: I have recently changed gearboxes on my Hyundai Lantra 1997 1.6lsi automatic but though it engages reverse as it should it needs to have the revs higher before it will engage drive forward gears.

I have been told I need to adjust the selector when the vehicle is in "a gear" but do not know which gear has to be selected for me to make this adjustment, could you answer this for me please?

ANSWER: I presume you're referring to adjusting the shift cable and range switch on top of the transmission.  This is done with the transmission in neutral.  Once in neutral, loosen the nut attaching the cable to the lever on top of the range switch.  Make sure the shift lever and range switch lever are in their detents and retighten the nut.  Then, examine the adjustment of the range switch itself.  There's a hole in the lever on top of the range switch that should align with the hole in the range switch when the transmission is in neutral.  If not properly adjusted, loosen the two 10mm bolts holding the range switch in place and twist the switch until aligned, retightening the bolts when done.

It is doubtful the cable and range switch adjustment is your issue.  If it were, you should experience problems starting and/or being in the incorrect gear when gears other than "D" are selected.  More likely, there's a problem with the transmission you've installed.

QUESTION: Thank you for your response and I will be checking this adjustment setting shortly.

As the vehicle will go into reverse and does engage drive ONLY with higher revs, (and then drives through all 3 gears as it should) could the problem be a lack, (or indeed overfill of transmission fluid) as I was also told?

The level does appear to be correct but I wondered if it wasn't "exact" this would cause the transmission to 'slip' !!

Again, thank you for your help on this issue.

Answer
An incorrect amount of transmission fluid can cause similar symptoms, although they, too, would likely involve more than just Drive.  Small errors in fluid level aren't critical.  As long as it's between the two lines (or even close), there won't be any abnormal symptoms.
