Hyundai Repair: car stalls/smells of gas, intake manifold gasket, fuel pump filter

Question
I have 1997 Hyundai Accent sedan and it starts and stalls, if I press the accelerator it runs. Sounds like it wants to stall when idleing, and occasionally does stall. Smells like gas from under back seat near fuel pump/filter? Can u help?

Thanks

Answer
Check for the cause of the fuel odor first.  The access panel for the fuel pump is under the rear seat, so there may be a problem with a fuel line, fuel vapor line, o-ring, or gasket, or even with the fuel tank, in that area.  If you're unable to locate the source of the odor on your own, take the car in to have it checked.  A fuel leak could potentially result in a fire.

As to the stalling, it could be a number of issues.  Among the most frequent issues to cause this issue would be a secondary ignition (spark plugs, wires, coil) issue, or a leak allowing excess air into the engine, such as a leaking PCV hose or intake manifold gasket.  Additionally, if your fuel pressure is low due to a leak, this could cause a similar issue.
