Hyundai Repair: Car lost acceleration, then died, abnormal circumstances, diagnostic work

Question
I was driving yesterday and the vehicle suddenly seemed to lose power, engine light came on and I lost acceleration. Since I was on a busy highway, about 10 minutes later I was able to start it and move it a couple miles to a gas station.  When my friend came to help me, he drove it onto the interstate where the same thing happened again after 10 minutes of normal driving. RPMs stayed at 1500 the whole time he drove it. Miles on this vehicle are 22000.  Had it towed to dealer and now I am without a car. (No loaners)Any help here?  Thanks for whatever info you can provide.

Answer
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd guess the problem is with the fuel pump.  Often, when they fail, they begin to overheat and fuel pressure falls off.  As the pump cools, it will again deliver sufficient pressure.

Even so, there remain many possibilities, and my intuition based on your description is no substitute for diagnostic work.  Unless there are abnormal circumstances, the dealer should be in touch with you within a day to let you know what the problem is and how long it will take to repair.  If the problem is simple enough, it may already be repaired when they contact you.

If you feel like the dealer isn't providing satisfactory service, politely let the service manager know what you'd like them to do.  If you don't get reasonable satisfaction, contact Hyundai customer assistance at 800-633-5151.
