ANSWER: Hi, Liam.

1.  Place the transmission in park and set the parking brake.
2.  Loosen the lug nuts on the left front wheel.
3.  Jack the left front wheel off the ground.
4.  Remove the lug nuts and remove the left front wheel.
5.  Remove the cotter pin and 32mm axle nut.
6.  Remove the 19mm ball joint nut and separate the ball joint from the knuckle.
(Alternatively, you can remove the 17mm strut bolts and the 17mm tie rod end nut and separate the knuckle from these items.)
7.  Separate the axle from the knuckle.
8.  Pry the axle out of the transmission.
9.  Install the new axle in the transmission.
10.  Install the knuckle onto the axle and reattach the components taken loose from the knuckle.
11.  Install the axle nut and a new cotter pin.
12.  Install the wheel.
13.  Lower the vehicle.
14.  Tighten the lug nuts.

QUESTION: You have inspired me
my sister needs to replace motor mounts as well, your instructions lead me to think I will have time to change those as well, mind you also doing her brakes
so, do you know the steps for changing the motor mounts on a 2000 elantra?
again, Thank you so much for your kind attention

ANSWER: I'll need to know which mounts you're replacing.  There are four.  One on top on the passenger side attached to the engine, one on the top on the driver's side attached to the transmission, and two on the bottom (one front, one rear) attached to the transmission.

QUESTION: The 2 mounts that need to be changed are the ones on the bottom, front and rear, It seems staight forward enough, but a bit challenging to get a wrench or socket in there, I loooked under and saw the mount, which seems to be held by 2 bolts I can access through the cross member, its the 2 bolts that attach to the bolck that seem difficult, I may try to separate the mount(break it up to 2 pieces, I see the bolt that holds the ruber bit to the lower bracket, once that is off I may have better access to the 2 bolts that attach to the block, once again thanks again for any advice you may have, You have already been rated excellent, and will be once again

Liam

Answer
If you're replacing both mounts, the easiest way to do this is probably to remove the front-to-rear crossmember by removing the four 17mm bolts holding it in place and the two 14mm bolts that run through the transmission brackets and the mounts.  Then simply swap the mounts while the crossmember is out of the car, and finally, reinstall the crossmember in the car.
