Hyundai Repair: 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT Fastback 2.0, hyundai elantra gt, clutch master cylinder

Question
I have 76K+ miles and noticed that when the temperature is very low outside, 15* or less, it is difficult to shift into gears. Also, how many miles should I expect to get on my clutch(5speed)? I have always owned a standard transmission, and am an experienced stick driver. Thank you.

Answer
If your clutch pedal depresses more easily than normal, check the level of fluid in the clutch master cylinder.  It's possible you have a leak and the fluid is leaking out.

If the clutch pedal depresses normally, you may have the incorrect gear oil in the transmission.  Heavier weight oils make it more difficult to shift when cold.  70W-90 or 70W-85 would be acceptable oils for this transmission.

As far as the clutch wear, it's hard to say.  I've seen people wear them out in 8,000 miles, and I've seen them last in excess of 100,000 miles.  Ultimately, it'll be related not only to your experience and driving style, it'll also be related to your driving habits and situations.  Just like the brakes, the more use it gets, the sooner it will wear.
