ANSWER: Hi, Gary.  As always, you'll want to check the simple things first.  While this problem could be caused by a misadjusted shift cable or a faulty or misadjusted range switch, the greatest likelihood is that the problem is in the transmission, requiring a transmission overhaul or replacement.

If you need information on how to check the cable and range switch, let me know.

Answer
First as a quick check, do the following:
-- Verify the engine will start in park and neutral
-- Verify the engine will not start in any other gear position
-- Verify that the reverse lamps come on when placed in reverse.
While not a precise check, if all the above items are normal, it's a pretty good indicator that the cable and range switch are adjusted and operating normally.  If any of the above items is abnormal, then the range switch or cable is defective or out of adjustment.

To check properly, you'll need to locate the shift lever on top of the transmission where the cable attaches.  As you look at the engine compartment with the hood up, the lever will be on top of the transmission just to the left of and below the battery.  This lever is attached to a shift rod which runs down into the transmission via a 14mm nut.  The shift cable is attached to a slot in this lever via a 12mm or 14mm (can't recall which) nut.  Shift cable adjustment is achieved by moving the nut in the slot.  Immediately below the lever you'll find the range switch.  It's held on the transmission via two 10mm bolts.  Adjustment of the range switch is achieved via loosening these bolts and rotating the switch to the proper position.

To check the adjustment of the cable and range switch, do the following:
-- Place the gearshift in park and apply the parking/emergency brake.
-- Break loose the nut attaching the cable to the lever on top of the transmission, and snug it down in the same position-- tight enough to prevent slipping between the lever and cable, but loose enough you'll be able to break it loose again easily.
-- Turn the ignition lock to the on position (without starting engine) and shift to neutral.  You should now be able to notice that the hole in the lever on top of the transmission lines up (or nearly lines up) with a similar hole in the range switch.  This will be important when we get to the point of checking/changing the range switch adjustment.
-- Again break loose the nut attaching the cable to the lever on top of the transmission, and this time leave it loose.
-- Verify the lever on top of the transmission and the lever inside the car are both settled in their detents.
-- Now retighten the nut, taking care to not move either lever away from the neutral detent.
-- Next, check the alignment of the range switch via the holes mentioned above.  They should be perfectly aligned.  If not, adjust as below.
-- Loosen (but do not remove-- 1/2 to 1 turn should be enough) the two 10mm bolts attaching the range switch to the transmission.
-- Rotate the range switch so that the two aforementioned holes line up.
-- Securely tighten the two 10mm bolts loosened above.
-- Shift to park.
-- Make sure the nut attaching the cable to the lever is sufficiently tight.
-- Shift to neutral and doublecheck the range switch adjustment.  If ok, you are done.  If not, return to the beginning of the shift cable adjustment procedure.
