Hyundai Repair: Elantra 2l CRDI, Hyundai, Elantra

Question
Hi,

I currently own a Hyundai Crdi 2.o liter engine, the engine is fitted with pete's digital tuning box.  The engine response is slow till it touches 2000 rpm.  Request your views to improve the performance.

Answer
The engine response on the 2 liter CRDi engine is actually tuned to where it should be for the most part. The torque curve is pretty steady for the vehicle and provides an accurate amount of pull for the vehicle size. The reason you feel a slow response in the engine until it reaches 2000 RPM is due to turbo lag and a lack of Horsepower before 2000 RPM. If you want to gain more acceleration in the lower RPMs, I would recommend tuning your turbo timing.

I have never actually personally used Pete's Digital Tuning Box, so I am not sure how you go about doing so with that setup. Another slight upgrade that you could do to gain horsepower in the lower RPMs is transition the horsepower curve itself to where the rise in horsepower starts much lower in the RPMs. However, this will also cause you horsepower to peak sooner, therefore changing the preferable shift point to maintain accurate power.

I don't typically like to tune diesel engines in particualr and have never actually worked on the CRDi engine. Gaining extra horsepower in the lower RPMs of a diesel engine is typically the best way to deal with a slow acceleration. The torque is adequate, so I would not try to alter that whatsoever.

I don't know if this will be of assistance to you, but I hope that it is. If there is anything else that I may be able to help you with, let me know and I will do my best to answer.
