Hyundai Repair: key stuck in ignition, Key, Stuck

Question
Hi and first off, thanks a lot for taking the time to do this. I have an elderly lady naibor of mine who was telling me that she has been leaving her key in the ignition of the car because it is stuck in the ignition. She said the steering wheel won't lock into place either when she puts it in park like it normally does letting her pull the key out. Now I'm no machanic but have the basic tools and knowledge that any man should about their cars. I suggested just disconnecting the battery for a few seconds to see if it triggers it to work. I'd didn't try it because she was leaving but what do you think? I would really like to help her out if I can.
Again thanks. Pat

Answer
Disconnecting the battery is not a bad idea considering, as you said, that would be the first thing to try. If that doesn't work, this may seem weird, but move the steering wheel back and forth as you try to remove the key from the ignition. Also, make sure that the ignition is in the right position to remove the key.

If this does not work, then there is a spring clip in the ignition that allows the steering wheel to move. Normally, when put into park, that spring clip locks into place and holds the steering also releasing the key at the same time. It would be a bit of a fix to try that on your own, so at that point I would recommend a mechanic to service the vehicle.

I hope that you are able to help her out though. I would hate for her to have to pay to have her key removed. If there is anything else I can do for you, just let me know.
