Hyundai Repair: complete engine failure, 2004, Hyundai

Question
I got a bad load of gas, 2004 Santa Fe 2.7 then ran very rough and the engine lite came on. Ran it out of gas and put in fresh gas still ran rough, took it to local mech and he reset the trouble code and everything was OK. 5 mi later the car simply died. Now the mech cannot even get a reading from his code reader. Help? Car has just over 100k mi and well taken care if. New O2 sensors (4), plugs, wires, cap, etc about 1200 mile ago.

Answer
My best guess with the engine stalling like that and not running at all, especially with the mechanic not getting a code reading now, would be that the ECU has been shot. When he reset the trouble code and it ran fine, that shows that your fuel system is not ruined. It sounds more like an electrical/computer problem, and considering the mechanic could not get a reading from the vehicle, the Engine Control Unit may not be sending the proper signals anymore. There is ways of testing them, but to be honest, when having a mechanic work with sensors or electrical equipment in a Hyundai, it is always best to have the dealer do it since the mechanics that work there have had the proper training to treat computer or sensory failures in the vehicles.

I would call a Hyundai dealer and speak to one of their mechanics to see what they think. It sounds like you have been on the right track with keeping up on your routine maintenance, but some things such as a faulty ECU cannot be avoided.

I hope that you are able to pinpoint exactly what it is and that it is an easy fix for you. If there is anything else that you might need help with, and if you find out what is wrong with the vehicle, I would like to know as well for future reference. Thank you very much.
