Hyundai Repair: 1999 hyundai tiburon fx, hyundai tiburon, quality transmission

Question
Hi, i have one question:
i have a 1999 hyundai tiburon fx... overall the car is in excellent shape except for one thing... when i sometimes shift into first from neutral at a stand still it feels/sounds like the gears are grinding.  when this happens the shifter has difficulty shifting into first(i can force it but it is difficult, i usually put it back in neutral and reshift and it is fine and smooth).  when i shift into any other gear it is completely fine, including reverse.  Out of 10 starts from stop this may occur once... it generally occurs when i shift into first quickly, but rarely occurs when i shift into first VERY slowely.  I just got this car, by the way with 96k miles on it.  it has a clean title and all.  my mechanic tried puting a better quality transmission fluid in, and said he'd try synthetic if my gear shift to first didn't improve.  another thing of concern i think is the synchros may need to be replaced, but i hope not!!  any thoughts on why this is occuring/ would synthetic oil really make that much of a difference?  it drives great except for that one flaw.

thanks for your time,
brian

Answer
Hello Brent,
Your 1st gear syncro is worn and causing that grinding. That means a transmission rebuild. Because when you have worn syncronizer, it will effect the other syncros. Once you are inside the transmission it is better if you replace them all.
