Hyundai Repair: 2004 Santa Fe, gas gauge, fuel senders

Question
Gas gauge reads empty all the time. It had been in for repairs(under warranty) approx 3 times over the past yrs. It has approx 67k on it. How can I check or repair this problem?

Answer
Empty on the fuel gauge is equivalent to an open circuit.  Your vehicle has two fuel senders (one under each side of the rear seat) wired in series, so you'll need to see which one has failed.  One way of doing this would be to short together the two wires for the sender at each sender unit.  If shorting the wires makes the gauge register anything other than empty, the sender with the problem is the one you've just bypassed.

To do this diagnosis, it'll help to have a schematic diagram available.  You can view the schematics (and other service information) for your vehicle at www.hmaservice.com (requires Internet Explorer and registering for a free account).  Once you've logged in, go to the ETM (electrical troubleshooting manual) section and select the gauge/indicator schematic.
