Hyundai Repair: Check engine light stays on, wheel speed, engine control module

Question
My 2004 Elantra just had all the belts replaced and a wheel axle and bearings replaced now the dang engine light is on and won't go off and the nearest dealer is 70 miles away and I'm afraid to drive it. Could it be something simple like sitting for 3 days in the local auto shop or am I in for a major overhaul.  I don't know of any codes or where to take it to find out any help would be grateful. The mechanic that worked on it is out of town for a week so I'm stuck in rural NV without a drivable car.

Answer
The things that cause check engine lamps can be small or major.  Since you had the hub bearings replaced, there may have been a problem with your right front wheel speed sensor.  Your engine control module monitors the sensor to determine vehicle speed.  If it doesn't see the signal from the sensor, it'll set the check engine lamp.  This sensor attaches to the right front knuckle and is typically removed to replace the bearing.  In many instances, it's rusted in place and attempts at removal result in breakage of the sensor.

As long as the engine and transmission seem to be operating normally, and the check engine lamp isn't flashing, it's typically okay to drive the vehicle.  If your car meets the criteria listed, I'd say just go ahead and drive it until the mechanic that performed the work is back in town and then have him look at it.  The check engine lamp can indicate a variety of things, some as simple as a loose fuel cap.
