Hyundai Repair: 2001 Santa Fe, tcs system, tone wheel

Question
I have a Santa Fe with around 95,000 miles on it.  Last Sunday the "ABS" and TCS" lights came on together.  The next day they went off.  Now 5 days later they came on this morning again.  Is this a sensor problem?  I have been told that if foreign objects or dirt get up in there they can trigger these lights, but that nothing is wrong with the ABS or TCS

Answer
Anytime these warning lamps come on and remain on, there is a problem and your ABS and TCS have been deactivated.  Even if on because a foreign object is between the sensor and tone wheel (not likely), that is indeed a problem and needs to be corrected for your ABS and TCS to operate properly.

To find out the nature of the problem, the diagnostic trouble codes in the ABS/TCS system will need to be read.  If you're the original owner, I'd recommend taking it to the dealer.  A common problem is that the tone ring on the axle breaks.  Since this is part of the drive axle, it's covered under warranty for the original owner for 10 years/100,000 miles.
