Hyundai Repair: Dash Hot Air sellection switchs, air flow control, lever stroke

Question
A friend of my daughters replaced her radio in her 1997 Hyundai Accent. In doing so he unhooked all heater and air flow cables. Now, she has only hot air at her feet and the selectors will only move a little bit. How can I fix this? Is there a free site which lets me download schematic for the heater and air flow control switches.

Answer
You can probably find a picture of the cable attachments at www.hmaservice.com (requires Internet Explorer, and registering for a free account) in the climate control section of the repair manual.

Reattaching and adjusting is fairly simple, however.  The fresh/recirc cable attaches to the lever behind the glove box.  Then, you simply need to determine which of the two remaining cables and levers on the heater box is which.  One controls where the air exits, and the other controls whether the air flows over the heater core.  Looking up at the heater box from underneath the driver's side of the dash, you should see two plastic levers.  Make sure they're intact and properly engaged on the heater box.  Move each one while the blower is running to see which one changes where the air exits.  Then move the switch controls to see which cable is attached to the switch controlling air exit location.  Install that cable on the appropriate lever.  Then install the remaining cable on the remaining lever.  Last, adjust the three cables so that a full knob turn (or lever stroke) results in full lever movement.  The adjustment is achieved by clipping the cable housing into place on the heater box.
