Hyundai Repair: strange noise from dashboard area and water pump question, dashboard area, service interval

Question
Hi, I have a 2004 elantra 73,000 miles. I would like to replace my water pump before it breaks, as I did with the timing belt service at 60K. When would this be a good idea?
Also, there is a strange sound that happens on occasion coming from behind the odometer area of the dash board. It sounds sort of like a CD player when the discs are changing. What is this? Thanks so much!! ~ Amber

Answer
The timing belt must be removed to replace the water pump on this vehicle, so you should attempt to replace both at the same time to save money on labor.  I'd recommend changing the water pump at the next timing belt service interval (120,000 miles).  I'd recommend replacing the water pump sooner than that only if it begins to leak.  In that event, consider whether it's worthwhile to spend the extra $50 to $100 for the price of the part (the timing belt) to have a new timing belt installed at the same time.
