Hyundai Repair: 1997 Hyundai Accent, torque converter clutch, torque converter clutch solenoid

Question
This car is not shifting into overdrive the OBD-II show PO747 and PO 743.  Is this logical or could it just be a bad wire located in the shifter handle.  Also no light comes on on dash when button is pushed in is this significant.  Alo about how much should it cost to lhave thses things fixed.

Answer
P0743 indicates an open circuit in the torque converter clutch solenoid circuit, and P0747 indicates an open circuit in the pressure control solenoid circuit.  If these issues continue to be present when you drive the vehicle, your transmission control module (TCM) will put the transmission in failsafe (third gear only).

When the O/D button on the gearshift is out, "O/D OFF" should illuminate on the dash and 4th gear will be disabled.  When the button is in, the dash indicator should go out, and 4th gear should be enabled, except in the case that the TCM recognized a problem with the operation of the transmission, such as the one described above.

In most cases, the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) you report are caused by a problem with the solenoids themselves, but can also be caused by a problem with the battery ground cable, a problem with the transmission control wiring, or a problem in the TCM.

I encourage you to register for a free account at www.hmaservice.com (requires Internet Explorer).  When you've logged in, enter the year and model of your car and look at technical service bulletin (TSB)
03-40-007-1.  It's a very well-written TSB that describes how to diagnose and repair the issues that cause the trouble codes you have.

If you need to replace the solenoids, I'd expect the repairs to run several hundred dollars.  For a better idea, you might call a few local repair facilities and ask them to give you a price quote for replacing the transmission solenoids.  This will give you a better idea than about price that I can.  You'll find that price varies greatly with the shop doing the work, the manufacturer of the parts, the vendor of the parts, and your geographic location.
