Hyundai Repair: High fuel consumption, fuel management system, wheel alignment

Question
I just bought an used Hyundai Accent 2005 and with my first full tank (35 l.), I was able to drive for only 200 km. What should I fix in my car to solve that problem?
Thank you for helping me.

Answer
I agree that your fuel economy is quite low (approx. 13.4 MPG), but since I don't know your driving situations, I cannot determine whehter it's normal.  Since you, too, think it's low, it probably is.

Before you make any repairs, you'll need to see if you can identify problems that will cause your fuel economy to be low.

To start, you'll want to make sure that your engine, transmission, and fuel management system are working properly.  While it'll probably take a professional to check this well, you can look for some trouble signs.  Your check engine lamp should come on for at least a few seconds when the key is turned to the "on" position.  This tells you that the bulb and circuit are working properly.  The lamp should be off.  You're looking for the engine to run smoothly and have normal power.  Your transmission should shift smoothly into all forward gears.  If you had a problem with one of these systems causing a fuel economy problem of your magnitude, I'd think it would be quite noticeable in the way the car operated.

Improper wheel alignment and brakes stuck partially applied can also greatly impact fuel economy.  Your car should freely roll down slight inclines.

Low tire pressures can also cause a reduction in fuel economy, but this isn't likely to affect the economy to the degree you've specified.
