Hyundai Repair: 1999 sonata gls, throttle position sensor, tps code

Question
QUESTION: I bought a 1999 sonata with 61,000 on it.I replaced the throttle positioning sencer and another sencer. The check engine light went off until the car was restarted than came back on.Took it back down to auto zone and now it has throttle positioning code and comptor error.Dont know what to do next.Does this mean my computor is no good? Also the car runs great but still wont keep same speed without loosing speed every minute or so.Kind of like taking foot off gas for 1 second.

ANSWER: Hi, Susan.  To get a good idea as to what's happening with your car, I'm going to need the actual trouble codes.  In many cases, generic scan tools (such as those used by AutoZone) don't provide the correct definition for the codes for all cars.  It's likely that the definition for the throttle position sensor (TPS) code was correct.  There are several TPS codes, however.

Also, since you have a TPS issue, please tell me which engine you have in your Sonata (2.4L 4 cylinder or 2.5L V6).  If you don't know which engine you have, the eighth digit of the vehicle identification number will tell me.

It's very unlikely that you have a problem with your computer.  Most likely, there's an issue with something the computer monitors.

QUESTION: Hi again, the first time we used the code reader it showed 2 codes, throttle positioning sencer and air control valve.we changed those parts and took the battery cable off to reset computor brain.we started the car and check engin light came back onso we took it back to auto zone and 9 codes poped up but wont let us read it ,says computor error.so we tested the reader on my daughter car and it worked fine. Please help me dont have much money . thank you  susan

Answer
You've left me a little confused here.  Perhaps it's because I'm not familiar with the code reader used at AutoZone.  One possibility is that the code reader is not properly communicating with your vehicle.

So here's what's leaving me confused:  how did you determine there were nine codes that popped up but not know what the codes were?

Please also tell me whether you have a four cylinder or V6 engine.  This will help me narrow some things.

And finally, is it possible you switched the connectors for the TPS and idle control valve with each other during the replacement?  This would cause a significant number of trouble codes.
