Hyundai Repair: Fair quote or not on car repairs?, emission control system, hyundai elantra

Question
on a 2000 Hyundai Elantra, 66,000 miles. My check engine light came on with a fault code PO446 Evaporative Emission Control System and PO441 Evap emission control system. The car repair suggested to replace purge valve & perform fuel system cleaning. This price is quoted at 407.94. Labor $248, parts $124 and hazard disposal $23.00 is this a fair quote?  Also, I have a CV Boot drivers side broke and need to replace axle. This was quoted for parts and labor to be $290.00. Are both of these quotes a fair price?

Answer
The prices seem fair quotes for the work to be performed, but I'm also in an area that has relatively high prices.  I'd recommend calling similar shops nearby and ask for price quotes on the same work.  That will give you a better idea as to whether they're appropriate for your area.

Since you have the P0441 code, it's rather definitive that you need a purge valve.  The purge valve can also cause P0446, but that's less frequent.  It's possible you have a further evaporative problem that won't be able to be detected until after the purge valve is replaced.

One of the things that makes it difficult to determine fairness of the price is that I don't know what the fuel system cleaning includes, and its cost is lumped together with the purge valve.  Unless the repair facility has some compelling reason to do some sort of cleaning, it probably isn't necessary.  It will certainly do nothing to address either of the diagnostic trouble codes.
