Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Accent 2001 1.6 DOHT, hyundai accent 2001, hyundai accent

Question
For a couple of weeks my Hyundai has trouble shifting up or down between gear 2 and 3. It will shift gears, but the car is almost jumping of the road while shifting gears. For about a week now the rear drive does not work anymore. A change of the transmission fluid or the transmission filter did not change anything! What could be the problem? Does the whole transmission have to be replaced or can I just replace some parts?

Answer
Based on the information you've given me, it's possible you have a sensor issue (such as a faulty pulse generator) or possible that there's a major transmission problem.  I'd recommend taking the car to the dealer for diagnosis.  I recommend the dealer in this case because the dealer will typically perform diagnosis without disassembly, and in my experience, the dealer doesn't have the reputation of trying to sell transmission overhauls when only a minor problem exists.

If your check engine lamp has been coming on, I'd suggest starting with having your engine and transmission diagnostic trouble codes read.  AutoZone and AAMCO have advertised they'll do this for free.
