Hyundai Repair: 2004 hyundai sonata crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, 2004 hyundai sonata

Question
QUESTION: i am trying to locate the cps. i have loosened up the steering pump assembly and moved it up out of the way and the exahust manifold heat sheild. the wire seems to go down into/behind the timing belt cover. is this piece located inside the timing belt cover? or is there a easier way to get to it? i read the other forums and i dont think it is the same as the 2000 model. any help would be greatly appreciated. i have the same syptoms as the other letter. car will start but shut down after it gets warm. code stated it was the c.p.s.

ANSWER: The crankshaft position sensor is behind the timing cover and reads a plate between the two crankshaft sprockets.  Unless your timing and balance shaft belts are new, I'd recommend replacing them when you make this repair.

QUESTION: can you tell me how to get the timing cover off to replace these two belts? and is the balance shaft belt with the timing belt? it looks like i might need to lift the engine up a little bit to remove these items. any advice would be appreciated thanks.   craig

Answer
The fact that you're asking me how to remove the timing cover causes me a little concern.  The timing belt on your car is difficult and tricky to replace correctly.  If you've never replaced a timing belt before, this is probably a job better left to a professional.  You'll need to remove the timing belt in order to replace the sensor.

To remove the timing belt covers, you'll need to remove the upper engine mount, the drive belts, the water pump pulley, and the crankshaft pulley.  You will indeed need to raise and lower the engine to access various parts to remove them.
