any tricks or surprises on the 2001 Sonata Gls when replacing the brake pad on the front axles?

Answer
It's about as straightforward as you can get.

Remove the bottom 14mm bolt from the caliper and rotate up.  Remove old pads and install new.  Compress piston, rotate caliper down and rebolt into place.

When done, be sure to pump up the brakes before attempting to drive.
