Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Tiburon Auto Transmission problem, hyundai tiburon, hyundai dealers

Question
My 2000 Hyundai Tiburon 2.0L (124,000 miles) automatic transmission will not go into 4th gear and slips in 3rd.  I cannot get reverse to engage.  There were about a dozen small (2-3mm) roller bearings in the pan about a month before these symptoms occurred.  Is it much work to pull the transmission?  Can the tranny be repaired?  Thanks for the help. Chris

Answer
Since you've found bearings in the pan, I'd recommend not repairing (rebuilding) this transmission.  While it can be done, the fact that the metal from the bearings has gone throughout the transmission will mean an absolutely thorough cleaning must be done.  That'll be very difficult to accomplish by anyone other than a facility that is set up specifically for rebuilding transmissions.  I'd recommend purchasing a transmission that's already been rebuilt.  Be sure to check with your local Hyundai dealers for pricing.  The dealer price may be lower than other sources for a remanufactured transmission.

Your transmission is one of the easier ones to remove, but any transmission requires a significant amount of work to remove.  At the very least, you should expect that you'll need help from one other person for removal and installation.
