Hyundai Repair: 2001 sonata tranny, sonata 2, remanufactured transmissions

Question
I have 2001 sonata 2.4l. I am having transmission problems. When it is cold it will shift into reverse but there is a delay and it makes a light whinning noise. When it warms up it takes even longer and wont really go into reverse, it will slip. If you tap the gas sometimes it will catch and go into gear but it is still weak. The fluid is full and doesn't look or smell bad. I reset the TCM. I do not have a dealer near me to test it and I just blew a connecting rod. I had previously bought a brand new engine so that is going in. I also have a parts car but the tranny on that really clunks into gear. I am at a loss with what to do when I swap out the engine. Do you think there is any hope for that transmission? It shifts so smoothly in drive. I dont trust that other transmission beacuse it shifts so rough. What do you think?

Answer
It doesn't sound good.  Probably, you need a transmission overhaul or replacement.  There's a remote possibility that the problem is with the range switch or with the shift cable adjustment, so be sure to check those items.

Since you're replacing the engine yourself anyway, do the transmission at the same time.  Call a few dealers in your area and price remanufactured transmissions.  Have you vehicle identification number ready.  Make it clear you're shopping for price.  You may get a very good deal.
