Hyundai Repair: 03 Hyundai Tiburon pinging noises, hyundai tiburon, timing chain

Question
i got a 03 tiburon 2.0 4sp auto and im getting worried about these pinging/knocking noises from the engine. i start it up and everything sounds normal until the idle lowers to 1500 through 1000rpm the you can really hear it knocking. but when its at normal idle just below 1000 rpm, its normal, but when i rev it up a little and let go of the gas you can really hear the pinging noises when the ide goes down, it sounds like my car is disel. but im thinking its from the valves opening and closing, but that loud? please help

Answer
You'll need to find the source of the noise.  To do this, probe around with a screwdriver or similar instrument to find where the noise is loudest.  Without hearing the noise myself, it's difficult for me to be certain what's causing it.

It's possible that the noise is coming from the timing chain.  Under your valve cover, at the transmission end of the engine, is a timing chain which joins the two camshafts.  It's possible this chain has worn and is flapping, hitting the guide and making the noise you describe.  The noise it makes is not usually very loud, but does sound something like a diesel.
