Hyundai Repair: hyundai accent 1.6 dohc, emission control system, purge valve

Question
QUESTION: hello
i have the code p0444 apearing on my obd reader... there is lots of gas in the egine head and there is also engine oil going into the air filter compartment... can the engine oil be coming into the air filter compartment due to these gases being produced?...due to the  Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Open
pls advise. Thank you
ANSWER: I'm not sure what you mean by lots of gas in the head.  For me to understand better, I'll need to know what you see/smell/feel and exactly where you see/smell/feel it.  In any event, neither this nor the oil in the air cleaner can be caused by an open circuit in the purge valve circuit.  If there is an open circuit, the ECM will be unable to open the purge control valve, and it will therefore remain shut at all times.

In regard to the oil, you should check your PCV system for proper function.  If it's working normally and not clogged (and your oil is not overfilled), you probably have significant engine wear.

QUESTION: hi
the gases or smoke smell like carbon monoxide, there is smokey gases in the top of the engine. what is the function of the purge control valve. as i have known when there is wear and tear of the engine then there is engine oil loss (and not expelling the eninge oil)...as you had advised earlier that the piston rings or piston might be at fault, i rule this possibility out... as when the rings wear out then the engine oil moves into the air and fuel mixture where it is also burnt up... but there is engine oil being expelled from the car. and the car throws black smoke from the rear when enggine bad, But my situation is a bit complicated, i have white smoke coming out of the rear and only when you start the car in the morning or when you fully step on the throttle. we can visually see that there is a lot of smoke which comes into the engine and thus trying to find a way out there is only 1 black pipe which is leading to the airfilter, this is where the engine oil is coming. i would also like to ask you that is the purge control valve remeains shut..where will all the emmission go?... my guess is that it will come into the engine ...pls advise

Answer
All of your emissions should go out the tailpipe.

The purge control valve is used to allow fuel vapors stored in the charcoal canister to enter the engine and be burned off.  It does not allow anything to leave the engine.

If you haven't done so, you should check your oil level.  Too much oil can cause the smoke you describe.

You should also check your PCV system.  There should be a PCV hose running from the intake manifold to the PCV valve in the valve cover.  There should be breather hose running from the valve cover to the air intake bellows (the large convoluted hose running from the air cleaner to the throttle body).  It is probably through the hose leading to the air bellows that the oil is entering your air cleaner.  Under normal operation, when the engine is running, the engine vacuum sucks vapors out of the crankcase through the PCV valve and this is replaced with air from the breather hose.  If the PCV valve is clogged, or the passage in the valve cover is blocked, or the breather or PCV hose is blocked, you won't have proper PCV function.

If you have no problem with your PCV system and your oil is not overfilled, I'm suspecting you have a major problem in the lower half of your engine.  Newer engines run hot enough that the black smoke you're accustomed to seeing isn't typically present.  In most cases, the smoke is white with a slight blue tinge to it.
