Hyundai Repair: 2000 Hyundai Elantra seat belt reset, air bag deployment, hyundai elantra

Question
QUESTION: Where is the reset button for the seat belts on a 4 door 2000 Hyundai Elantra? We bought this car used and the air bags had been replaced but the seat belts are locked up. How can we get them unlocked???
Thanks so much for any help!
ANSWER: The seat belt pretensioners have fired.  You cannot reset them.  You'll need to replace the seat belts and buckles.

This should have been done as part of the repair for the air bag deployment.  Other things that should have been done are replacement of the air bag control module, air bag wiring harness, and clock spring.

QUESTION: Any idea how much all that will cost? Does all of it have to be replaced to get the seatbelts to work or just seat belts and buckles???

Answer
Only the seat belts need to be replaced in order for them to retract and buckle.  Your best bet for finding out how much that will cost is to call a few places in your area that do that sort of work and ask for an estimate.  Prices will vary by part manufacturer, part seller, whether parts are new or used, and geographic location.

Fixing the seat belts so that they buckle, however, won't address any of the other things that should have been done to repair your supplemental restraint system.  You should make it a priority to see what has been done so you can determine what else needs to be done.

Hyundai has a technical service bulletin stating the required repairs after a supplemental restraint deployment.  You can view it by registering for a free account at www.hmaservice.com.  You'll be interested in TSB 04-90-002.
