Hyundai Repair: 2003 Hyundai Elantra Engine Oil leak, 2003 hyundai elantra, engine oil leak

Question
Hi
I recently got a oil change and after 3 days of having changed  the engine oil, I saw there was big leak of oil when the engine was started. I took to the technician who changed the oil to see what is the problem. He says it is not related to the oil change and something else is bad in the Engine. Its only 35K driven car and took this to dealer and dealer says the engine bearing has fallen and it would cost me $5000 approximately to fix it. Can you please explain what might have gone wrong. Could this be due to oil change by any chance.

Answer
Chances are the oil leak is unrelated to the oil change.  If your dealer didn't suggest a relationship between the oil change and the oil leak, it's probably their opinion that no such relationship exists.

I have seen about two or three engines like yours where one of the crankshaft thrust bearings failed and came out, in turn allowing the crankshaft to move and push out the crankshaft seal, causing a large oil leak coming from the crankshaft pulley area.  In the cases where I've seen this, the crankshaft and block were damaged, making the best adviseable course of repair to replace the short block, which would be about the price you indicate.
