Hyundai Repair: Sonata TCM 1999, selftest, time problem

Question
We ust puchased a 99 Sonata for my daughter with 112,500 miles.  The check engine lifht came on and the code shows P1613; Irad your pevious response regarding the TCM.  Do you think the best resolve would be a new one or getting a used one?  You help is appreciated.

Answer
P1613 is used for several different purposes, depending on which car it's used for.  The definition given in the service manual is "ECU selftest failed."  This is vague enough that I'd recommend taking the car to the dealer for the dealer for diagnosis or just to report the language used on the Hyundai scan tool for the code.

I'd first try clearing the code before doing anything else.  It's possible it was a one- or two- time problem.  If you do want to replace the TCM, I'd recommend trying used before trying new.  The chances of getting one with the same issue are very low.
