Hyundai Repair: 2001 hyundai accent no spark, obd ii code reader, crankshaft position sensor

Question
My sisters 01 accent just died. The battery was still charged and turned the engine over fine. She was pulling into work and the car died. I looked at it and it turns over, the timing belt looks good. I pulled a plug wire and looked for spark and found none. I checked a plug wire from each coil pack and neither created a spark. What drives the spark on this car? Would it be a bad crank shaft sensor or somthing else?

Answer
The engine control module controls the firing of the ignition coils.  The primary input it uses to determine proper spark timing is the crankshaft position sensor.  Without that input, spark is impossible.

In most cases, a faulty crankshaft sensor leaves a diagnostic trouble code in the engine control module (ECM).  If you can, you should check the diagnostic trouble codes with an OBD-II code reader.
