Hyundai Repair: timing belt replacement, replacing timing belts, 2005 hyundai elantra

Question
i have a 2005 Hyundai elantra with a 4 cyl engine with 67,000 miles  according to the maintenance recommendations it should be changed at 60,000 mile intervals my question is, most dealers in my area are asking $400-$500 to do this work is this a fair price? or would a general mechanic be able to do the work cheaper but still be quality work

Answer
Whether $400 to $500 is a fair price will depend on your geographic location.  It's on the upper end of the pricing scale for your car, but if you're in a high price area such as Los Angeles, New York, or D.C., I'd say that pricing is about normal.

The timing belt on your vehicle is simple to replace, so a mechanic with experience replacing timing belts should be able to do it with no problems.  If you're the original owner, I'd recommend requesting the replacement belt be a factory original.  This will preserve your 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on the replacement belt (once the work is done).
