Hyundai Repair: 96 hyundai dohc 4c 16v engine noise, power steering fluid, power steering pump

Question
whether at stop or moving, loud deep/low pitch pumping/sloshing noise coming from viscinity of power steering pump which increases with rpms. noise is 0-3 miles old with no other change in performance.

engine is 30k miles old. No changes in parts. recent fill  up with higher grade fuel. all fluid levels are good. actually, the day before the awful noise I checked the power steering fluid level. The car was off and cold, it shouldn't have affected anything.

what could it be? Suggestions?

Answer
It's possible that your power steering pump is worn, or you've sprung a leak and the fluid is now low.  But there are many other items driven by the engine that can make similar noises.  Take a long screwdriver and probe each of the items driven by the engine or one of the belts (alternator, p/s pump, compressor, water pump, pulleys, etc.)  Put your ear on the other end of the screwdriver and listen at each component.  In general, the one you're touching when you hear the loudest noise is the culprit.
