Hyundai Repair: Noise after timing belt change, climate control system, elantra gt

Question
I bought a used 04 Elantra GT (2.0L, 4 spd auto) with 61K miles. I gave it to Pepboys today for a timing belt change at 63,500 miles. They also changed the serpentine belt, a/c belt and alternator belt.

After driving it 5 miles today, a noise started coming from the engine; it sounded similar to what a noise from a loud exhaust would make. The noise came only when accelerating. I returned the car to Pepboys and they are checking it. Any idea what it might be?

Also, a sweet smell comes from the vents when the heating is on. Is this a spoilt heater core, or could it be something else?

Answer
There's not much that would occur during a timing belt change that would cause a noise only on acceleration that sounded like loud exhaust.  The way you describe it, it sounds like an exhaust noise.

The odor you notice could be a leaking heater core, but it's more likely to be a coolant leak under the hood.  The vapors can enter the car through the climate control system.
