Hyundai Repair: xg300 will not start, electronic throttle control, secondary ignition

Question
The last time I got my xg300 to start the engine was shaking.  I drove it home and at first you could hear the engine trying to turn over but would not.  I went and had the battery check and that was good.  I reconnected the battery cleaning all of the connections and when I went to start the car nothing happened. No turnover, nothing.  There was some smoke coming from the hot wire. (I did make sure that the battery was on right) Could this be my starter has locked up and would that cause my engine to shake when I drove it home?

Answer
A battery or electrical issue typically won't make the engine shake.  It sounds like you may have two issues.

First, the smoke is probably part of the information about your starting issue.  In most cases, there's usually a poor connection from wherever the smoke was originating.  If it was coming from the battery terminal connection, suspect a connection problem there.  If from the starter, suspect a connection problem there or a problem with the starter.  If from the center of the wire, suspect a problem with the starter or with the wire itself.

For the engine shaking, it sounds like you have a misfire or low idle.  Misfires tend to happen at all RPMs, while low idle tends to occur only when the vehicle is stopped.  For a misfire issue, you should primarily suspect the secondary ignition system (coils, plugs, plug wires).  For a low idle issue, you should suspect a problem with the electronic throttle control.  In most cases, either will turn on the check engine lamp.  If this has occurred since you disconnected the battery, you should have the engine diagnostic trouble codes checked.
