Hyundai Repair: 2.4L 2000 Sonata Timing Belt, balance shaft, crank sensor

Question
You folks have been immensely helpful.  I am reassembling the daughter's 2.4L, 2000 Sonata, Timing Belt. First off, it appears that the destruction of the counter-balance belt is what screwed up the Crank Sensor to begin with.  That belt was easy to replace.  I am confused on how to set the Counter-Balance Belt.  There is a triangular mark on the shaft sprocket.  With the engine at TDC, should I simply align that mark with the mark on the casing?  And where is this Oil Pump Plug they speak of in the Service Manual (Left side of engine?  Looking from what perspective?)

Confused,
BOB

Answer
You've got the right idea on the balance shaft belt.  There's a notch in the case with which the mark needs to align.  The mark should be at 9 O'Clock when aligned.

I assume the oil pump plug you're referring to is a bolt in the front of the block in which a screwdriver can be inserted to insure proper alignment of the front balance shaft/oil pump sprocket.  What they don't tell you is that the plug is behind the exhaust manifold where you cannot get enough access to put a screwdriver in it.  To make sure the front balance shaft/oil pump sprocket is aligned correctly, align the mark on the sprocket with the mark on the case.  Then turn the sprocket a little away from alignment.  If it tends to return, it's aligned correctly.  If it tends to continue turning in the same direction, you need to rotate the sprocket 360 degrees.
