Hyundai Repair: 00 Accent, hyundai accent, timing belt pulleys

Question

-------------------------------------------
When my car is at an idle or I come to a stop at a red light the car starts chugging and when I take off it chugs momentarily and then the check engine light flashes then stops chugging cleans up but the check engine light stays on. Could this be a plug issue or timing?

HI,
My 2000 Hyundai Accent started to make this squealing noise, So I stopped and put some belt dressing on it.didn't really help. But I don't think that it's comming from the alternator. sounds like by the timeing belt( which was replaced in 04) if so is the pullys that hard to change? thank for your time Mark

You'll need to remove the timing belt to replace the timing belt pulleys.  Once the timing belt is off, it's a fairly simple matter of unbolting and replacing the pulleys.  As timing belt jobs go, yours is relatively simple.  But if you've never done a timing belt before, I'd recommend having someone guide you if you're going to attempt this yourself.

Before attacking the timing belt pulleys, you should try to verify that's where the noise is originating.  Unfortunately, belt dressing often complicates matters.  When does hte squealing noise occur?  If it occurs while the vehicle is simply idling, you can spray some WD-40 (just a little bit) or similar lube on the belts.  If the noise changes or goes away, then you'll know it was the belts.  Since you've applied belt dressing, you'll need to remove the belts, clean all the pulleys very well, and install new belts.

If it's not coming from the belts, I'd recommend taking a long screwdriver and probing the various components of the engine while the noise is occurring.  With one end of the screwdriver on a component and your ear on the other end, you can often hear clearly where the noise is originating.

Answer
You've definitely got a misfire.  Most misfires are caused by secondary ignition problems (coil, wires, plugs).  But the fact that it clears up when you come off idle suggests that there may be some other type issue.  Is your idle speed abnormally high?

You'll want to take care of misfire issues pronto.  If you keep driving while the engine lamp is flashing, you stand a large likelihood of damaging the catalytic converter.  Additionally, the noise could be related to the fact that your engine is running poorly.
