Hyundai Repair: 2002 Hyundai XG350 L Power Steering Leak, 2002 hyundai xg350, hyundai xg350

Question
Hello,

My power steering is giving me problems.  The Hyundai dealer recommended replacing the P/S pump for a cost of about $700 with parts/ labor.  They indicated that it is leaking.  I have not had any visible fluid on the garage and the problem just started.  Can I order a seal kit ($16 at Dunwood Hyundai parts) and have someone install this kit?

Answer
If the problem with the pump is simply a sealing issue, then resealing the power steering pump should solve the issue.  But it's possible there's a deeper issue such as a worn bearing.  In that case, it won't matter how many seals you install, the shaft will always push to one side of the seal, causing a leak on the other side.

If you think the seal kit is a plausible solution, you should probably check with the dealer that gave you the estimate and gather their opinion.  They've seen the pump and are in a better position to know whether it can be resealed than someone who hasn't inspected the pump.  If they think it's possible to reseal it, ask them to give you an estimate for that as well so you can make an educated decision.
