Hyundai Repair: car wont start/think its the fuel filter?, fuel pressure gauge, gas gauge

my car, i think, ran out of gas(gas gauge isn't working)so i put gas in it but now it wont start it's a '92. i think it might be the fuel filter. my mother in law was driving it before and said when it got low in gas it would die on her so her boyfriend banged on the fuel filter(i think) and it started running again, where is the fuel filter, and do you think that's what it is?

The fuel pump should be the primary suspect.  The symptoms you list are consistent with fuel pump failure.  

I'd recommend attaching a fuel pressure gauge at the fuel filter to see if you have sufficient fuel pressure.

The fuel filter mounts to the firewall on your vehicle.
