Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Elantra Speed Sensor? Problem, vehicle speed sensor, hyundai elantra

Question
Hi I have a question about my 05 Elantra.
I bought it new and has not been in an accident and driven properly. I was told I am having a problem with my speed sensor. My speedometer isnt reading right and it is the only thing I notice. My other gauges seem to work.
I know someone who might be able to fix it but he isnt back in town yet to check. I dont know much about hyundais and was wondering how hard is it to fix? Can you tell if that is the problem by checking it? And what if im told it is normal? I know some things get checked on cars and come back 'borderline' but is actually the problem.
I had a problem with a previous car with the alternator and I was first told it was fine then it drained my battery and both had to be replaced when I couldnt start my car one morning.
Is it hard to replace the sensor and where is it located on a Elantra (4door),is it easy to get to or how would I?
I hope you can answer my question I will have it looked at in a few weeks but right now I am worried about getting a tickit (Eveyone speeds and how knows how fast youre going)
Thanks Rachel

Answer
The speed sensor gets its signal from the vehicle speed sensor on top of the differential of the transmission.  The sensor isn't difficult to replace.  If I recall correctly, there's only one bolt holding it in place, and there are only a couple items to remove to gain access.

But at this point, I have no reason to suspect that the sensor is the actual issue.  How is your speedometer not reading correctly?  It's possible that the issue would be in the speedometer itself or in the wiring between the sensor and the speedometer.

The speedometer will either be working correctly when the check it or it won't.  If you're told that your issue is normal, then the speedometer should at the very least be operating properly at the time it's checked.  Furthermore, if the speedometer isn't working properly when it's checked, the shop should be able to make a proper diagnosis at that time.

Most likely, what happened with your previous alternator issue is that it was probably working normally when the car was checked.  Sometimes alternators stop working intermittently when they begin to fail, and that would explain why it checked okay when you took it to the shop.

I get the impression, too, that you may not be taking this car to the dealer for service.  If you have less than 60,000 miles, you should take it directly to the Hyundai dealer, since the problem should be covered by the new vehicle 5 year/60,000 mile warranty.
