Hyundai Repair: 2003 Elantra needs new computer?, hyundai computers, 2006 elantra

Question
My check engine light has been on, and I took it to the shop. My mechanic says that a short in the computer is causing the light to go on. I could continue driving it and most likely have no problem, but if the check engine light REALLY went on, I wouldn't know because it will always be illuminated.

He said the solution is to replace the computer, which he said would involve tracking down a 2003 computer and finding someone to install it.

First of all, is it worth it to replace the whole computer? Secondly, how much would this likely cost?

Answer
These computers are quite expensive.  But it should be covered under the federal 8 year/80,000 mile federal emissions warranty.  If your car has less than 80,000 miles, I'd expect that to be a covered repair.

I have significant doubts that the issue is your computer.  First, Hyundai computers have very few issues that require replacing the computer.  Second, I have never seen nor heard of a 2001-2006 Elantra actually needing to have the ECM replaced for any reason.

Do you know what the trouble code is?  If so, that will help me know what the problem may be.
