Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Elantra 2000-check engine light on, hyundai elantra, emissions test

Question
Hi,
I just found that in my Hyundai elantra check engine light has started glowing. I'm not getting what the problem is...as otherwise it is running almost smothly as usual. What can be the probable reason?
Is it risky to drive it around?
Is it mandatory to get it repaired?
Any estimate how much it may cost on an average?
Any help will be really appreciated..

Thanks

Answer
There are many things that can cause a check engine lamp to illuminate.  Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what the problem may be without knowing what the diagnsotic trouble code is.

Depending on the issue, there could be a problem if you continue driving.  In most cases, if the lamp isn't flashing, and you notice no change in performance, it's okay to drive.  To be certain, you should have the car checked within a reasonable amount of time.

Depending on the emissions laws in your area, it may be necessary to repair the problem to pass the emissions test.

Without knowing the problem, it's difficult to estimate a cost for repair.  Could be $50 or $5000.

One thing you can do on your own is to check your fuel cap.  If it's loose, off, or incorrectly installed, the vehicle will detect a fuel vapor leak.  If that's the case, properly install the fuel cap.  If the lamp goes out within a week of driving, the fuel cap was likely the issue.
