Hyundai Repair: Ignition switch doesnt turn - sometimes - Hyundai, hyundai elantra, factory representative

Question
Hyundai Elantra (I think 2004)

My ignition switch would not turn at all after inserting key.  After a few tries it did work.  After stopping at a few more stores (stops & starts) the same thing happened and for 10 minutes I was trying to turn the ignition.  The steering wheel would turn and the car was in park.  The dealership will only "look at it and try to duplicate problem"  if it doesn't duplicate they will not fix it.  However this problem isn't consistent and just began.  What is the problem?  How do I get this fixed?

Answer
If the ignition lock won't turn (and the steering wheel isn't locked), the problem is either with the key or the lock cylinder.  Check your key to be certain it's not bent or otherwise deformed.  If it's an original in good condition, the problem is most likely with the lock.

If the dealership cannot duplicate the condition, perhaps make this offer to them:
Offer to purchase a new key cut from the vehicle's key code (not duplicated off one you already have).  If when the problem reoccurs, it happens using both keys, it's a reasonable conclusion that the problem is with the lock itself.  Would they be willing to replace your ignition lock cylinder under that circumstance?

You've given enough information here that if your description is accurate, you've covered most of the possibilities of the normal things that would occur that would make the key hard or impossible to turn.

If you feel like you're not being treated reasonably by the dealer, request to speak with the service manager.  Politely explain to the service manager what your issue is.  In most cases, the service manager will be interested in doing all that Hyundai will allow in order to satisfy you.  If you still do not receive satisfaction, call the Hyundai customer assistance number (1-800-633-5151).  The complaint will likely get routed back to your dealer, but it will also come to the attention of the factory representative.  The representative has the ability to authorize things that Hyundai may not normally allow.
