Hyundai Repair: hyundai 60k service, mile powertrain warranty, 2004 hyundai sonata

Question
i have a 2004 Hyundai sonata.
After i spoke to the dealership about my 60k service...i was informed it would cost close to $450 for the 60k service .
Also i was told to do the timing belt change to continue my 100k warranty which costs an additional $400.

I am confused why service is so expensive and at the same time why is timing belt replacement being charged (isn't that a part of Bumper to bumper 60k warranty).

I really appreciate if you can explain me in detail if i am being given the right info by the dealership.

Answer
Different dealerships have different packages that they sell as a 60,000 mile maintenance service.  To be able to speak to you intelligently about why the service costs so much and whether everything included is necessary, I'll need to know what specifically that dealer's 60,000 mile service includes as well as what engine you have in your Sonata.  As a check on your own, you should compare the services provided by the dealer with the services required in the maintenance section of your owner's manual.

The timing belt is covered for the original owner of the vehicle by the 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.  But it's also a maintenance item.  Hyundai requires (except in California) that you replace the timing belt every four years or 60,000 miles (the maintenance interval for the timing belt) to maintain that coverage.  In other words, if the timing belt on your car has been there for more than four years or 60,000 miles, anything needing repair due to a stripped or broken timing belt would not be covered by the warranty.

If you have a four cylinder engine, it's extremely important to replace your timing and balance shaft belts by the maintenance interval.  I've seen many of these belts fail in close proximity to the specified interval, and in most cases, engine damage occurs when the timing belt fails.
