Hyundai Repair: removal of the starter, negative battery cable, factory service manuals

Question
I cannot seem to locate the bolts that hold in the starter. The starter is covered by a frame that supports the clutch cable etc.A diagram may help.

Answer
Based on your description, it sounds like you have a four cylinder engine with the starter under the intake manifold.  If that's the case, the starter will be held onto the transmission by two 14mm bolts that screw in from the transmission side.  As you look at the area where the transmission bellhousing attaches to the engine, you'll see two 17mm bolts.  As you move rearward toward the firewall around the bellhousing, you should get to the two 14mm bolts that hold the starter in place.

Before attempting to remove the starter, be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable.  This will prevent making a short circuit with the lug on the starter.

If what I've described isn't the layout of your vehicle, please reply with the year and model of the vehicle so I can make sure of where the starter is located and how it is attached.

I'm also unable to make diagrams here, but you can view the factory service manuals at www.hmaservice.com.  You'll need to register for a free account, and the site requires Internet Explorer.
