Hyundai Repair: 1999 Hyundai Alternator, negative battery, battery terminal

Question
How do I remove the plug on the alternator?

Answer
Before attempting the following, disconnect the negative battery terminal.  This will prevent a short circuit that could result in large sparks and blowing the main fuse.

The plastic plug snaps in place.  If you look closely, you'll see a tab that must be pressed in to release the connector.  In many instances, these connectors are difficult to break loose.  In those cases, I usually unbolt the alternator and move it to where I can more readily grasp the connector with my full strength.  If the connector is still stubborn, it may be necessary to use pliers to be able to hold the tab in and pull on the connector simultaneously.

To remove the main lug, you'll need to unbolt the 10mm or 12mm nut holding it in place.  On some cars, the lug is in a plastic housing that is held onto the alternator by a 10mm bolt.  On those vehicles, it may be necessary to open a plastic door at the top of the housing to access the lug.
