Hyundai Repair: 2004 Hyundai Rear Brakes, parking brake cable, rear brakes

Question
How do I know if the rear brakes on my 2004 Hyundai Accent need adjusting? I am having trouble with my front brakes wearing out early. How do you adjust the rear brakes if they do need adjusting? Does apply the parking brake adjust the rear brakes?

Answer
If your parking brake will not hold the vehicle in place, you'll need to adjust your rear brake shoe clearance.

You can do this one of two ways.
You can remove the drums and adjust the star wheel on the adjuster bar on the rear brakes.
Or you can remove the console and adjust the parking brake cable.

When properly adjusted, you'll be able to turn the rear wheels (while off the ground) with a small amount of resistance from the brakes.  The wheels should turn freely when pushing the car on the ground.
