Hyundai Repair: 2001 Hyundai Elantra start problem, hyundai elantra, auto parts store

Question
I don't believe it is the battery for the simple reason that even when my car refused to start, I could still turn on my lights, turn on my radio, etc. Does that mean it can't be the battery? Would the next logical conclusion be to get the starter tested at my local auto parts store if I can successfully remove it myself?

-----Question-----
I just purchased a used 2001 Hyundai Elantra two weeks ago. All of a sudden, it won't start. I turned the key, but it doesn't crank. There is the sound of a single click, though. I  believe it might be the starter. Is the starter in a position in which I can replace it myself? I'm trying to avoid taking it to a dealer/mechanic since money is tight after my recent purchase.
-----Answer-----
The starter is under the intake manifold.  Replacing it will require removing the air box and will take some contortions to get out.

Have you checked the battery?  It's the number one cause of the condition you describe.

Answer
It can still be the battery.  The starter requires much more energy to operate than any other device on the vehicle.  I'd recommend removing the battery and having that checked at the parts store, or installing another battery first.  It's easier to remove and at least in my opinion, is more likely to be the problem.  You can make of my opinion what it's worth.  I'm only basing it on your description and my experience with what I've seen on vehicles with the problem you describe.  But I also have the handicap that I don't have the car in front of me to inspect.

While it's possible the problem is with the starter, I think it's unlikely.  Hyundai starters have *very* few problems.  You should probably start with checking the easier things and move on to the starter as more of a last resort.
