-----Question-----
I have a 1994 Hyundai Scoupe non-turbo car.  Just recently, I noticed on my panel is the "check engine" is on.  Can you please tell me what's wrong or how to diagnose what's wrong with my car.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
-----Answer-----
You'll first need to retrieve the trouble code(s).  To do so:

1.  Turn the ignition to the "on" position (without starting vehicle).
2.  Ground pin #10 in the diagnostic connector for 2.5 seconds.  The connector is located in the fuse box.  There will be eight pins (sockets) in one row, and the other will have five separated into two on one end and three on the other.  Starting from the end of the connector that has the two pins in one row, count in the eight pin row over three pins.  This will be pin #10.  You should be adjacent to the space in the other row where there are no pins.  I've done my best to make a diagram illustrating the position.
_ _ ___ _ _ _

|_|_|X|_|_|_|_|

3. The codes will be output by the check engine lamp.  There lamp should come on for 2.5 seconds, then display a series of flashes.  It'll flash some number of times, pause, flash, pause, flash, pause, flash.  The first code should be four flashes, pause, four flashes, pause, four flashes, pause, and four flashes for code 4444.  The code should repeat until you signal for the next code.

3.  To signal the next code, ground the wire again for 2.5 seconds.  Record the code.

4.  Repeat step 3 until you receive code 3333 (end of output).

You can get information as to the meanings of the codes (as well as the procedure above) at www.hmaservice.com.  You'll need to register for a free account, and the site requires internet explorer.  If you'd like, you can report the codes back, and I'll tell you what they mean and advise you on how to proceed.

Answer
You need to take a wire and clip it to terminal #10 (as shown by the "X" in the diagram I made) and then touch it to a good ground for 2.5 seconds.  Ground means anything that's connected electrically to the negative post of the battery.  Any bare metal under the dash should serve the purpose well.  I've often used as a ground the pin attaching the door check to the body on your model.
