Hyundai Repair: Check engine light, catalytic converters, catalysts

Question
I was driving down the road and my check engine light came on. I wasn't going fast or anything. I can't figure out what it came on for. I gutted my 3 cats on the headers and exhaust, could that have anything to do with it?

Answer
Presuming your car is model year 1996 or newer, that absolutely can have something to do with it.  All 1996 and newer vehicles monitor catalyst efficiency.  Not only have you committed a serious crime by removing the catalysts from your vehicle-- if you don't think it's serious, check the penalties-- but your check engine lamp will continue to come on until you purchase new catalytic converters and install them.
