Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Santa Fe Front End Knocks, sway bar bushings, hyundai santa fe

Question
I own a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe. Last year, it began feeling loose in the front end especially over bumps and turns. There was a dull knocking noise when I would turn suddenly left or right. I eventually took it to my mechanic who said the ball joints were bad and replaced them. It was like new for a couple of months but gradually began to deteriorate back to the same symptoms previously described. The same mechanic now says he is confused, can't figure out what is wrong. He checked everything he could think of including the ball joints which he says are still good. He recommended I check with Hyundai certified mechanics but I thought I'd do some research first. Does any of this ring a bell with you?

Thanks.

Answer
This definitely rings a bell.  There's a technical service bulletin (TSB) about a knocking noise over rough surfaces at slow speeds.  There are redesigned sway bar bushings and brackets to correct this condition.

It's TSB# 02-50-010.  You can read the TSB (and print it) at www.hmaservice.com.  You'll need to register for a free account, and you'll need Internet Explorer for the site to operate properly.
